What's Included

The Starter Plan includes all the base features necessary to build simple websites and applications. Based on your objectives, you might needs features that are not included.

Don’t worry, you can get them thought the Marketplace at any point.

Note that Plant an App allows unlimited number of users and usage on the licensed features, unless explicitly mentioned by a specific package.

Form Builder (aka Action Form)

If you’re coming from DNN Sharp Action Form, you’ll get the same form building experience, including all the innovation we’ve added over the past few years.

Note that some features are available as add-ons such as

  • Integration Features (actions for SQL or doing server requests)
  • Dynamic Forms (actions that create forms programmatically)
  • Scripting (actions to execute razor or JavaScript)

Listing (aka Action Grid)

This module allows visualizing data in tabular format, with the ability to add custom Buttons to execute specific business logic.

The same functionality that existed in DNN Sharp is there, except embedding Action Form inside rows – this has been replaced by opening forms in popups or the listing Inline edit.

Note though that the old views are Bootstrap 3 and in legacy mode. New, more modern, Bootstrap 5 views exist which can be upgraded to optionally.

Entity Builder

One of the greatest features in Plant an App is the Entity Builder. It’s a visual data modeler that will create robust database tables and the forms and listings associated with managing the data.

Previously, you would have had to have extensive SQL knowledge to create the tables, then manually build all the forms and listings and write all the queries needed to interact with the data.

Action Engine

The Plant an App Action Engine comes with 100s of prebuilt actions to achieve various use-cases, simple or complex, such as

  • Sending email communication
  • Generating documents
  • Manipulate Users
  • Do Files Management
  • Programmatically work with Portals, Pages, and Modules

And all of these can be achieved without needing to know how to code!

Tabs (aka Tabs Pro)

Everything that you knew from Tabs Pro is still available, giving the ability to create great layouts for pages with lots of data or content.

Use tab layouts to

  • Create multi-step forms
  • Group Content in separate sections
  • Display multiple data tables on the same page

Core Tokens (aka My Tokens)

All the DNN Sharp Core Tokens that previously existed in My Tokens are still around, plus a few more.

The ability to create Custom Tokens requires other packages such as Data Integration which offers the ability to create SQL tokens, or Scripting that allows creating Razor tokens.

There are available via the Marketplace.

Excel Package

Provides capabilities to import and export data from Plant an App applications to Excel, filing the gaps between systems and people.

User Management Package

Comes with many actions such as Registration, Login, Authorization, and others – ideal for building forms and user management screens.

File Managment Package

Includes Actions to work with folders and files, such as creating folders, renaming and deleting them, creating files, and so on.

Portal Managment Package

Programmatically create portals and pages, add modules to them, import and export content, and other Actions to automate portal management tasks.

Community Support

Get assistance from our vibrant and passionate community on the Community Forums. Agent based support options are also available on upgrade.

The Plant an App Marketplace

With the release of Starter Plan and version 1.27, we are also introducing a Marketplace.

Initially, it will list features, packages, plans – everything that can be added to the Starter Plan to help successfully achieve your objectives and be the super-hero in your organization or for your customers.

Whether it is AI capabilities, search features, automation, payment providers, or integration with Salesforce – we have it all. And if it’s not there, our platform is highly extensible so new capabilities can be added by any developer. Or reach out, and we’ll add it to the product roadmap or build it custom for you.

Subsequent phases of the Marketplace will include opening it up for everyone in the community to publish their own packages, such as

  • • Integrations
  • • Application Templates
  • • Modules
  • • Themes

You are not alone

At Plant an App, we’re dedicated to your success with a range of support resources.

Our Documentation Portal and Academy offer structured guides and self-paced courses, while Low-Code Café sessions and our YouTube library provide hands-on learning and real-world insights.

FAQs

What DNN versions to you support?

New releases are extensively tested to run on the most recent DNN versions. For 1.27, the minimum DNN version is 9.11.2 and the recommended one is 9.13.7, which is the latest published one at the time of the 1.27 first Alpha release.

What is the upgrade process?

Simply install a package called DNN Installer. This takes care of upgrading your DNN instance and all DNN Sharp modules to latest.

Note that DNN Installer only runs on DNN 9.6.1 and DNN Sharp 5.6 and above. If you are running earlier versions, this will involve some manual upgrade steps first. Our team will provide instructions.

What about Search Boost?

Search Boost is the most sophisticated and powerful engine for DNN. An enhanced version exists in Plant an App that has been constantly developed over the past few years.

Thought not a part of the base Starter Plan, the Search Engine package can be licensed through the Marketplace.

What about App Sharp / Web Sharp?

Web Sharp and App Sharp packages contains many other features such as Automation, API Builder, User Guide builder, add-ons, and more. All features and packages that are still supported are available through the Marketplace.

What happens if I stop my Plant an App subscription?

Stoping a Developer Seat license will stop access to getting Agent based support and using developer features such as Versioning or non-production environments. The Dev Seat is automatically downgraded to the Free Community plan. There is no impact on the runtime application functionality.

Stopping the Starter Plan subscription will cause the Plant an App modules to stop working altogether. The DNN website will continue to work, but pages that contain Plant an App modules will show a warning until the respective modules are removed from the page.

Is the Starter Plan right for me?

The Starter Plan is definitely a great start for everyone. And all the features that you’ve used previously from the DNN Sharp modules are either included in the Starter Plan or available on the Marketplace, such as Automation, API Builder, executing SQL, and so on.

However, if most of the features are needed, it might be more cost efficient to opt for the Harvest plan which provides all capabilities except the Enterprise features.

Will I lose my previous work from DNN Sharp modules?

Plant an App installs in DNN just as any module and upgrades all your DNN Sharp modules as well, maintaining all the configuration you’ve had so far.

However, depending on which version you’re upgrading, some features might not exist anymore.

Such examples include jQuery date pickers that have been removed, Easy Container that is no longer maintained, or embedding forms inside the listing that has been replaced by Inline Edit or Form popups.

Can I use just Action Form?

There’s nothing stopping you from using Action Form alone. However, you are missing all the value in handling what happens after that form gets submitted, which is mostly working with data and executing business logic.

Is everything from DNN Sharp still supported?

Most of the features present in DNN Sharp are still supported and continued to be enhanced. There are some features that we’ve deprecated and removed. Here are some links that describes some of them -  v1.25 Breaking Changes or Obsolete Features.

Can I test it out first?

Yes, a 7 day trial can be evaluated either on your own DNN Instance, or directly on our SaaS infrastructure.

Can I continue to host it?

Yes, Plant an App installs in your DNN instance just as any other module.

If you’re interested in hosting it with us on our SaaS infrastructure to eliminate the pain of managing infrastructure, we got you covered. The Starter Plan comes with a shared hosting environment with the limitation that there is no super-user access to install 3rd party modules. This is usually sufficient for running small websites and applications.

We have additional packages that come with dedicated cloud resources, for running highly efficient, scalable, and robust production environments.

Is there an unlimited licensing model?

The standard Plant an App licensing is per domain.

We do have some Enterprise and Government plans that offer unlimited use within a department or organization. Reach out to learn more.

Can I uninstall Plant an App?

You will likely never want to this based on what our customers experiences so far.

Currently, we have no automated way to install it, but our support and engineering teams can provide manual steps to do it. Plant an App is ultimately a collection of modules which can be uninstalled from DNN Extensions. The challenge is to know the right order in which to do it.
